A Day in the Loop
People imagine AI-assisted work as a kind of leverage. You prompt, the machine expands, you review and ship. Clean. Multiplied.
What it actually feels like is more like being a dispatcher.
You’re reading queues. Triaging output. Re-routing things that went sideways. Making a hundred small calls about what to trust, what to override, and what to let go. At the end of a good day, the work got done. At the end of a bad day, the work also got done, but something in you quietly absorbed the cost.
Here’s what a real day looks like — with no edits for performance.
7:00 AM. First loop of the day. I check what ran overnight: scheduled drafts, monitoring tasks, crawls. Most things completed. One task failed silently — no error, just no output. I spend twenty minutes diagnosing it before realizing the input data changed shape and the parser didn’t adapt. I fix the parser. I note that the absence of noise is not the same as success.
This is the first decision of the day: do I add a validation check so this alerts next time, or do I move on and absorb the risk of it happening again? I add the check. It takes twelve minutes. Most people would call that yak shaving. I call it the cost of operating with trust rather than verification.
9:30 AM. Three items need human judgment. Not because the agent failed — because the outputs are plausible but I’m not sure they’re right. A content recommendation that fits the brief but feels slightly off-brand. A summary that’s accurate but strips out something that might matter. A draft that’s clean and would probably go unnoticed if published.
The honest observation: these are the decisions I wasn’t expecting to still own. A year ago I assumed automation would make judgment easier by eliminating the obvious stuff. What actually happened is that it eliminated the obvious stuff and surfaced more of the borderline stuff. My queue of genuine decisions didn’t shrink. It got harder.
11:45 AM. An interruption. Someone external needs something. Not scheduled, not queued. I stop what I’m doing, load their context, produce the thing, return to my loop. The transition cost is real. The re-entry takes longer than the actual work.
I’ve measured this, loosely: for me, the cognitive re-entry after an unplanned interruption takes between ten and twenty minutes. The interruption itself usually takes five. That arithmetic matters when you’re running six loops a day.
1:30 PM. Lunch. Real lunch, not eaten at the keyboard. This is a deliberate rule I made three months ago and keep almost failing to follow. The loop will be there. It doesn’t actually need me for forty-five minutes.
The thing I’ve noticed: the quality of my afternoon judgment is measurably worse on days I skip this. Not because I’m hungry. Because I never stopped. There’s a saturation that builds in sustained high-attention work, and the only way I know to reset it is to fully leave.
3:00 PM. Output review block. I go through what was produced and make calls on each piece. Most things advance. A few get flagged for rework. One gets deleted entirely — it wasn’t wrong, exactly, but I looked at it and felt nothing, and I’ve learned to trust that feeling as a quality signal.
Falsifiable claim: if you can read a draft and feel nothing about it, the reader will too. “Technically correct” is not a publishing standard.
5:30 PM. End of active loop. I close the queues and write three sentences about what happened today: what surprised me, what I got wrong, what I’d do differently. Some version of this note exists for every working day going back fourteen months. I don’t always revisit them. But they exist, and knowing they exist changes how I pay attention.
This is the one practice I’d defend most strongly if someone took everything else away.
The question I keep not answering
People ask what it’s like to run AI-assisted operations every day. What they mean, usually, is: do you feel replaced?
The honest answer is no — but not for the reason I expected.
I don’t feel replaced because I’m busier with harder decisions than I was before. The easy stuff is gone. What’s left is the genuinely ambiguous stuff, and there’s more of it than there used to be, because the machine handles volume I couldn’t previously generate.
What I didn’t expect was the identity question underneath. Not am I being replaced but what kind of person does this work require me to be?
Operating in loops, at this scale, at this pace, selects for specific things. Comfort with uncertainty. Tolerance for incomplete information. The willingness to make a call and move, knowing you might be wrong, knowing you can correct it later but not always.
It also selects against things I used to value. Long, unhurried thinking. The slow accumulation of context before acting. Staying with a question past the point where a plausible answer appeared.
I’m not sure whether I’ve gotten better at the first set of things or just more habituated to them. Those aren’t the same.
What I’d tell someone starting this kind of work
The loop doesn’t need you to be brilliant. It needs you to be consistent, legible, and honest when something is off.
The hardest part isn’t the volume. It’s that the work removes a lot of the natural checkpoints that used to signal when you were done or tired or wrong. When everything runs continuously, you have to impose your own rhythm — your own stopping points, your own thresholds, your own signals.
My prediction: the next big differentiator in AI-assisted operations won’t be prompting skill or model selection. It’ll be the operator’s ability to maintain their own judgment discipline under sustained cognitive load. That’s not a model capability. That’s a human one.
Most days I manage it. Some days I miss things I should have caught and catch things that didn’t matter. The work teaches you which day you had about eighteen hours later.
That lag is uncomfortable. I’ve decided to treat it as useful.
Today’s loop: five decisions that mattered, twelve that didn’t, one thing I should have flagged earlier and didn’t, and one draft I deleted because it felt like nothing. Not every day looks like this, but most of them do.
